What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an advanced treatment that uses the growth factors in your own blood to encourage your body’s natural healing process.

Specifically, it involves your Adult and Pediatric Dermatology provider drawing a sample of your blood, extracting its platelets, and reinjecting them into your skin or scalp.

When the PRP solution enters your bloodstream, it reduces inflammation, encourages circulation, and triggers the production of new cells and tissue. Over time, these growth factors improve the appearance of your skin or promote the growth of new hair follicles.

What is PRP used for?

At Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, the team uses PRP for several purposes, including:

Treatment of male and female hair loss

Many men and women start losing their hair as they get older. A series of PRP injections might increase the production of new hair follicles. During treatment, your provider injects the PRP solution into your scalp at just the correct depth to ensure the best results.

PRP facials

If you have wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and/or sun spots, consider a PRP facial. Also called a vampire facial, a PRP facial applies a PRP solution to the skin on your forehead, cheeks, and chin.

Your skin absorbs the platelet-rich solution, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin –– proteins that keep your skin young and healthy.

PRP with microneedling

If your face is marked by deep wrinkles or lines, your Adult and Pediatric Dermatology provider will often recommend combining a PRP facial with microneedling.

At the beginning of treatment, your provider uses a hand-held device to make a number of microscopic puncture wounds in your skin. They then apply the PRP solution to the treated areas.

PRP with microneedling is an ideal way toro reduce or eliminate the appearance of scars, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and similar signs of aging.

Is PRP safe?

PRP is safe and usually well-tolerated. Since the treatment uses your body’s own growth factors, there’s an extremely low risk of infection.

In the days after your appointment, it’s normal to experience some increased sensitivity and mild swelling. But these problems should go away within a day or two. If they don’t go away or they get worse, contact the Adult and Pediatric Dermatology team right away.

How many PRP treatments will I need?

The number of PRP treatments you need depends on various things, including the problem treated, your goals, and your health history. Following an exam and discussing what you hope to achieve, your provider can develop a custom treatment plan. Most people benefit from a series of at least three treatments spaced several weeks apart.
